Starting and managing an AppServer with the Progress Explorer
You can use the Progress Explorer on a Windows platform to start:
To access the Progress Explorer tool, you can open it from the OpenEdge program group or in the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) on your Windows system. For more information, see OpenEdge Getting Started: Installation and Configuration . Once you have opened the Progress Explorer in the MMC, you can start an AppServer instance.

To start an AppServer instance:
- In the Progress Explorer, connect to each of the running AdminServer processes required by your AppServer configuration. The name or IP address of the machine running each of these processes appears as a folder in the tree view.
- Expand each machine folder to see a list of folders showing the name of each NameServer and AppServer product installed on the machine.
- Expand the NameServer folder under each machine to see a list of configured NameServers.
- Start each NameServer that you need to support your AppServer instance and that is not already auto-started. For more information, see OpenEdge Getting Started: Installation and Configuration .
- Start each OpenEdge database or DataServer that your application requires and that is not already auto-started. For more information on starting databases and DataServers, see OpenEdge Getting Started: Installation and Configuration .
- Under the machine folder where it resides, expand the AppServer folder for the instance you want to start.
- Select the AppServer instance you want to start.
- Do one of the following:
Using the Progress Explorer, you can also invoke the following management functions for the running AppServer instance:
Note: You cannot stop the AppServer if it is actively handling any client requests.- Stop the AppServer.
- Check and manage the operational status of the AppServer. Using the status dialog box, you can also reduce (Trim servers button) and increase (Add servers button) the number of running AppServer agents for this AppServer. For more information on the effects of these functions, see the "Specifying the server pool parameters" section. For more information on AppServer status indicators, see the "Checking AppServer status" section.
- View the log files for the AppServer. To view a log file, expand the AppServer instance folder in the tree view and select the log file you want to view. The contents of the log file appear in the right pane.
Note: Before you can delete an AppServer instance, you must stop the AppServer.- Delete the AppServer instance.
